Through the JETSI project, NFI has expanded beyond early pilots to build a fully integrated clean freight ecosystem. High-power charging, on-site solar and battery storage, and optimized dispatching strategies now work together to keep its drayage fleet moving efficiently across Southern California.
“NFI has been at the forefront of electrification from the very start. First with the Volvo LIGHTS project, and now we’ve scaled that experience through JETSI to one of the nation’s largest zero-emission fleets,” said Brian Webb, President of Port Services & Global, NFI.
The Day in the Life video follows battery-electric truck driver Bilal Abdul-Zahir through a typical day of drayage operations, transporting freight between the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and Inland Empire facilities. Viewers see how charging infrastructure, yard management, and driver workflows align to support dependable, zero-emission freight movement.
“There’s a big difference when it comes to the performance,” said Abdul-Zahir. “My favorite thing about driving electric trucks is that it’s smooth, it’s powerful, and at the end of the day, I don’t smell because of the exhaust.”
NFI’s battery-electric fleet recently surpassed 10 million zero-emission miles nationwide, a milestone that reflects not only environmental impact, but operational reliability at scale.
From charge-based dispatch strategies and Green Lane access at the Port of Los Angeles to generating WAIRE points, NFI is demonstrating that zero-emission trucking is not a future goal. It is operating today at full scale.
JETSI is jointly financed by California Air Resources Board and California Energy Commission ($26.98 million), MSRC ($8 million), and South Coast AQMD ($5.4 million), with an additional $21.7 million from Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles, Southern California Edison, NFI, and Schneider. JETSI is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
